The History of the Balkans (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and Former Yugoslavia) examines the legacy of Byzantium, Ottoman and Habsburg rule, the rise of nationalism, the emergence of Balkan nation-states, and the impact of the 20th-century conflicts, especially the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Emphasis will also be placed on Venetian influence and the impact of the region’s geography on its history.
