IDESN 1270
Language of Design
Lesley University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Language of Design is an intensive introductory studio that builds foundational skills and habits essential to visual communication. Through a series of structured projects, students explore ideation, iteration, visual analysis, and form-making, learning how meaning is constructed through deliberate design choices. The course emphasizes sketching and analog experimentation as a starting point for conceptual development, followed by guided instruction in Adobe Creative Suite tools to refine ideas digitally. They explore relationships between image, form, hierarchy, and spatial organization, gaining fluency in the visual language that underpins all graphic design. By the end of the semester, students will be able to translate concepts into clear and intentional visual compositions--establishing a strong base for advanced studies in typography, image-making, and interactive design.
