Catalog description

Providing PreK-12 teachers with an overview of literacy research, theory, and policy, this course is grounded in the understanding that literacy is complex and multifaceted, and that language and culture are essential components of literacy development. Students will explore oral language, phonemic awareness, explicit phonics instruction, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing instruction; consider the relationship between assessment and instruction; analyze instructional materials; and plan and implement anti-racist, culturally sustaining, and developmentally appropriate reading comprehension instruction.
