Catalog description

This foundational course introduces students to evidence-based methods of instruction in reading, writing, listening, and oral communication in early childhood and elementary school settings. Students analyze, construct, and reflect on empirically-supported methods for teaching oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Students learn to design culturally and linguistically sustaining literacy instruction, differentiate approaches, and use robust assessment to guide planning, using the Massachusetts English Language Arts frameworks.
