The United States incarcerates more people than any country. More than two million people are locked in prisons, jails, and immigrant detention centers. Another 7.2 million are on probation, parole, or under deportation orders. An estimated 65 million have criminal records. The origins of mass incarceration are rooted in American history. The course centers narratives of marginalized people most harmed by mass incarceration. Students are challenged to deconstruct mass incarceration through their discipline and experience.
