Selected topics as determined by the Englsh faculty. Topics may include, but are not limited to, individual authors, specific periods, literary genres, and thematic problems. Prerequisite: Any course in British or American literature at the 200 level, LIT 240, or permission of the Division Chair and/or completion of the General Education Core. ENG 488-01: Sp Tp: Creative Writing: Haunted Appalachia (2011/SU) A creative writing class that uses the unique qualities of this area as a setting for genre fiction (horror, mystery, ghost, etc.). The class will study both traditional and contemporary stories set in and around the mountains of western North Carolina. By the end of the course, students will have produced three polished stories and written one research essay exploring a theme or author concerned with fiction from this region. The class can count as ENG 301 (Creative Writing) or be taken for personal enrichment and enjoyment.
