BIO-388-01: Field Entomology (4) (2025/SU) This course will offer an introduction to the world of insects and the discipline of entomology. Students will explore the diversity of insect biology and structure with emphasis on collection, identification of adults, and preservation techniques. Multiple field trips will be taken to observe and collect insects across a range of Southern Appalachian habitat types to better understand their ecological roles and lifestyles. Students will create an insect collection to showcase the results of their field surveys. 15-20% lecture, 80-85% field-based experiential learning. BIO 388-02: Careers in Veterinary Medicine (2025/SP): This class will focus on preparing students in the Pre-Veterinary Medicine major on how to make themselves strong applicants for veterinary school, what to expect during the application process, and what to expect once they are admitted to a veterinary medicine program. Additionally, through instructor and guest speaker personal experiences, attending students will gain an understanding of the diversity of career options for graduated veterinarians. BIO 388-01 Animal Mind & Ethics (2023/SU) This course is focused on the study of animal minds and the moral implications of animal cognition. We will survey historical and contemporary arguments about the consciousness of non-human animals and will consider how the status of non-human animals as conscious beings affects their moral status. In doing so, we will consider the best ethical practices for interacting with non-human animals in a variety of contexts. BIO 300-02 Falconry (2023/SU) BIO-388 03 Ecotoxicology (2023/SU) This course provides students with an introduction to the field of ecotoxicology: the study of fate and effects of contaminants in ecosystems. While toxicology examines effects at molecular, cell, and organism levels, effects at higher levels are not always predictable based on findings at lower levels. Ecotoxicology integrates effects at multiple levels of biological organization. Students will gain knowledge of the principles and current theoretical issues within the field. Daily material will cover the different classes of environmental chemicals, ecotoxicological effects on wildlife, human exposures and health effects, basic mechanisms of toxicity and environmental epidemiology. A case study approach will be utilized in lectures and labs to examine the toxic effects of heavy metals, organic compounds, insecticides, and environmental endocrine disrupters. Lab and field sampling can include non-human blood and/or tissue samples retrieved from the Mary Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and/or water and soil samples retrieved from the Elk Valley Field preserve, Mill Pond and/or surrounding areas belonging to the Lees-McRae College campus. Prerequisites & Notes: BIO 282 and 292 or BIO 114/115 or BIO 121, and CHM 111. BIO 388-01 Zoonotic Disease (2021/SP) This course is designed to highlight how zoonotic diseases affect both human and animal health, using a One Health approach. Disease transmission, hosts, reservoirs, and clinical signs will be discussed for bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic, prion, and vector-borne diseases. Emerging/neglected diseases and prevention strategies will also be evaluated, as well as current disease outbreaks. BIO 388-02 Digital Radiography (2021/SP) This course gives students an overview of veterinary digital radiology. Comparisons of various machines, the physics of generating an image, radiation safety, patient positioning, image acquisition, and an introduction to image assessment will be discussed. Students will have an opportunity for experiential work with case studies and the digital radiograph machine at the May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
