Practicum in Public Humanities

This course will allow students to participate in collaborative public history/humanities projects developed in conjunction with partners in and outside of Le Moyne College with an emphasis on people, places, and events in the CNY area. The projects will allow students practical experience in researching, preparing, and presenting humanities focused projects for a public audience. The projects will allow students to expand their skills and interests outside of the academy and into the public sphere. Such projects could include a museum quality display of the Salt Springs Neighborhood or an oral history of Dolphy Day or the HEOP program or a podcast on a topic of local interest such as the abolition movement that would allow students to explore the religious, literary, artistic, and historical aspects of that movement in CNY. These are only a few possible topics to bring humanities into dialogue with an interested public audience while providing important experience to students who wish to pursue a career in museums, cultural resource management, public arts, libraries and archives, or community development.
