Slavery & Emancipation in Atlantic World

Catalog description

This course examines the rise and fall of slave labor in the Atlantic world, from the European peasant revolts of the 14th century through the abolition of unfree labor in Brazil in 1888. The course will emphasize the varieties of slave labor across space and time, as well as gender roles within slave societies. It will also investigate the impact of urbanization and connections to larger market economies on slavery, and particularly slave resistance and rebelliousness. Readings, research, and discussion. Fulfills Core Requirements: Diversity (DIV) and Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS).
