From Civil War Through Civil Rights: African American History Since 1865

This course surveys the thoughts, ideas, and actions of African Americans from emancipation through the long Civil Rights movement to the present. It focuses on major African American figures, the Era of Reconstruction, the rise of Jim Crow, the Great Migration and development of urban black communities, the social protest movement through the 1940s, the civil rights movement and black power movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and racial issues through the election of Barack Obama as the first black president. Race, class, and gender are important elements of this course, as well as African American literature, film and music.
