Catalog description

This course provides evidence-based practices to for special education instruction and assessment in general and specialized settings for students with disabilities. Teacher candidates will apply knowledge and skills to help struggling students succeed academically as well as with social-emotional skills and behavior. Course content and assignments address research and practice for educating students with special needs based on IEP and 504 plans. Topics include pre-referral strategies, special instructional programs, differentiation, universal design for learning, and planning for transition. The course will also address classroom management, and effective techniques to provide physical, emotional, and social environments that are safe, supportive, and conducive to learning. Teacher candidates will complete 20 hours in special education field placement.
