Catalog description
This is a required course for all teacher candidates preparing for New York State teacher certifications. Teacher candidates Grades 1-12. will examine how research-based knowledge about how children and youth develop and learn drives effective classroom instruction in inclusive settings. The focus will be on the application of research-based information related to motivation, developmentally appropriate practices, and strategies for teaching cognitive processes in both general education and special education. Topics include but are not limited to using various theoretical perspectives as a foundation to teach content to diverse student populations; using these models to plan implement and assess learning of all students, and designing educational opportunities that take into account cultural and socioeconomic factors and their impact on teaching diverse children and youth. Teacher candidates will apply this information in a required field experience which will provide the setting to view and work with students from diverse backgrounds in local schools.
