Intro to Chemistry

Catalog description
In this introductory lab science course, students name chemical compounds; write chemical equations; explain and describe physical properties of gases, liquids, and solids; examine atomic structure, chemical bonding, and mass relationships and energy changes in chemical reactions; discuss properties of acids and bases, chemical equilibria, and nuclear chemistry; identify organic functional groups and relate them to biochemistry. Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 0810 and MATH 0900 or equivalent placement test score.

(Students must register for Lab section CHEM 1000L-260.) This class offers face-to-face, online synchronous, and online asynchronous instruction simultaneously during every class session. Students who choose to participate online will join class via Teams or complete a mandatory online learning component instead. Experiments will be performed in-class and/or at home using laboratory materials rented from Laramie County Community College. Students are expected to either pick up the lab materials from the LCCC Ludden Library within the first week of the class or MUST contact the instructor to rent the laboratory materials by mail. Experiments will be performed at home using laboratory materials rented from Laramie County Community College. Students who live in the vicinity of Cheyenne or Laramie are expected to pick up the lab materials within the first week of the class from the LCCC Ludden Library at the Cheyenne or Laramie campus. Students who live more than 50 miles away from an LCCC campus AND within the contiguous United States MUST contact the instructor to rent the laboratory materials by mail (shipping requests should be made the week before class begins).
