Supporting Exceptional Learners in General Education provides an overview of exceptionalities, with emphasis on K-12 learners in inclusive educational settings. The course examines disability categories and high-incidence/low-incidence needs, as well as giftedness and twice-exceptionality, through historical, legal, ethical, and sociocultural lenses. Candidates explore characteristics of learners with disabilities; the impact of disability on learning and development; and evidence-based instructional, behavioral, and collaborative practices used to support meaningful access to grade-level curriculum. The course emphasizes inclusive practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiation, assistive technology, accommodations and modifications, and the roles and responsibilities of general and special educators in implementing IEPs, 504 plans, and MTSS supports.
