The study of how the Spanish language functions within social contexts, emphasizing the interplay between language and society in shaping its use across dialects and communities. Topics include variation, multilingualism, language contact, lexical borrowing, code-switching (including Spanglish), and other language phenomena in society. Emphasis is placed on descriptive, corpus-based, and data-driven approaches to understanding real-world issues in sociolinguistics and language variation.
