Catalog description

Foundational Literacy Practices examines the foundational skills, dispositions, and environmental support that develop before and alongside conventional reading and writing. Emphasizing research-based early childhood literacy practices, the course explores oral language development, phonological awareness, concepts of print, early writing, alphabet knowledge, vocabulary, narrative development, and motivation to read. Preservice teachers learn to create language-rich, culturally sustaining learning environments; design developmentally appropriate literacy experiences (e.g., interactive read-alouds, shared writing, play-based literacy centers); and use observation and early literacy assessments to guide instruction.
