This course builds upon foundational backpacking principles, expanding your skill set for multi-day expeditions. Begin with an exploration of advanced gear selection, lightweight packing techniques, and route planning considerations. As the course progresses, immerse yourself in hands-on practice, refining navigation proficiency, practicing Leave No Trace principles, and enhancing wilderness safety skills. Through a blend of classroom instruction and practical application, gain confidence in tackling diverse terrain and planning extended wilderness excursions. This 42-hour course includes advanced gear selection, lightweight packing techniques, route planning strategies, navigation skills refinement, Leave No Trace principles, wilderness safety protocols, and a 3-day, 2-night backpacking expedition. Culminating in an immersive wilderness experience, apply newfound knowledge in real-world scenarios, preparing for independent multi- day backpacking adventures with confidence and competence. ADVISORY: WLD104 - Outdoor Leadership and Living Skills OR WLD131BV - Backpacking: Beginning SPRING 2026: NOTE: This class is partially online/EVE and partially in class on campus. Students will be using a computer to assist with the learning process and are expected to attend class 41 hours with the remaining 1 hour completed online/EVE. SUMMER 2026: NOTE: This class is partially online/EVE and partially in class on campus. Students will be using a computer to assist with the learning process and are expected to attend class 33 hours with the remaining 9 hours completed online/EVE. FALL 2026: NOTE: This class is partially online/EVE and partially in class on campus. Students will be using a computer to assist with the learning process and are expected to attend class 41 hours with the remaining 1 hour completed online/EVE.
