Emergency Medical Tech (EMT)

Catalog description

This course provides instruction to the level of Emergency Medical Technician. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with fire, ambulance, or other specialized services. This course is instructed in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and the California Code of Regulations (Title 22) and is approved by the El Dorado County EMS Authority. Successful students will be prepared for EMT certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). This course requires participation in clinical experiences taking place in emergency room departments of hospitals and in operational ambulance units. Attendance is mandatory at the first class and all class meetings to receive certification. Students must maintain a cumulative average of 80% in the class to be eligible for certification to take the NREMT exam. Successful completion of this course requires adherence to course policies, maintaining a cumulative average of 80% and a minimum score of 80% on the course final examination, and successfully demonstrating all required skills. There are additional fees required for local and state certification, NREMT testing, Live Scan background checks, and course materials fees. The majority of fees are paid to external agencies. In support of the stated student learning outcomes, there are 24 TBA hours for clinical placement. EMT Mandatory Orientation Meeting MUST precede enrollment. PREREQUISITE: Mandated by Barton HealthCare for all students with direct patient contact in the clinical setting. To provide documentation of two doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunization or positive antibody titers; two doses of varicella vaccination (Chickenpox) OR positive antibody titer; documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination OR positive Hepatitis B surface antibody titer; screening for documented history of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccination; and results of a recent TB test within the last year. Students with a history of a positive PPD (Tuberculin skin test) or Quantiferon blood test in the past must provide a chest x-ray report and/or documentation of any medical treatment for TB. During flu season (September through March) students must provide documentation of annual flu vaccination. Covid vaccination and boosters. Mandated by Barton HealthCare for all students with direct patient contact in the clinical setting. ADVISORY: Current Emergency Medical Responder card (preferred). NOTE: The mandatory EMT orientation must precede enrollment. SPRING 2026: NOTE: This section is partially online/partially in class on campus. Students will be using a computer to assist with the learning process and are expected to attend class 208 hours with an additional 35 hours completed online. SUMMER 2026: NOTE: This section is partially online/partially in class on campus. Students will be using a computer to assist with the learning process and are expected to attend class 216 hours with an additional 27 hours completed online. FALL 2026: NOTE: This section is partially online/partially in class on campus. Students will be using a computer to assist with the learning process and are expected to attend class 211 hours with an additional 32 hours completed online.
