Catalog description

This course is a supervised placement in an agency providing services to chemically dependent clients. Students apply and integrate the values, knowledge, and skills learned in the classroom through direct experience in the area of counseling and chemical dependency. Special attention to the California Consortium for Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) required experiences of counseling will be addressed. This course includes classroom instruction as well as direct supervision by a qualified instructor. Students will attend workshops and other educational opportunities as directed. Fieldwork experience is the foundation of this course and students will learn to apply the acquired knowledge and values as specified in the "12 Core Competencies" (TAP 21) at an agency approved by the instructor. Ethics and scope of practice for alcohol and drug counselors are addressed in this course, as well as personal and professional growth for counselors. NOTE: In addition to other course requirements, students will be expected to complete at least 40 hours of volunteer work per unit or 50 hours of paid employment per unit.
