ESOL Foundations: Second Language Acquisition ((3 Credits ))

Catalog description

This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates with the foundational knowledge of applied linguistics and communication so they can effectively teach English Language Learners (ELL) and students from multiple language and heritage backgrounds in K-12 settings. This course will provide teacher candidates with an overview of the history of U.S. language policy, legislation and The Florida Consent Decree. Teacher candidates will examine communication strategies with regard to ELL students and stakeholders. Teacher candidates will also study language principles, the nature of first (L1) and second (L2) language acquisition, major L1 and L2 acquisition theories, and effective strategies for promoting language development in K-12 settings. Course objectives and assignments are designed to prepare students for the Florida ESOL Endorsement (Domains 1 & 2). Teacher candidates will practice methods and strategies developed in this course during field work in EDG 4942 .
