Foundations in Podiatric Medicine

Catalog description

Foundations in Podiatric Medicine introduces the student to the history and advancement of the podiatric medical profession and podiatric medical education. Students will become familiar with the governance structure, key policies of the profession, and standards of podiatric medical education. Fundamental to competent patient care is an understanding of the principles of medical professionalism, integrity, and servant leadership. Furthermore, following the tenets of medical ethics, the doctor-patient relationship, and interprofessional practice serve to all individuals regardless of personal circumstances fortifies the student’s ability to provide high quality patient care in a holistic manner. Students are also introduced to the concepts of evidence-based medicine, research methodology, biostatistics, and policies associated with human subject research. The course concludes with an overview of taking a history and physical exam of the lower extremity, lower extremity surface anatomy, and basic biomechanical principles of the lower extremity. Students will apply this information to a series of clinical cases which demonstrate the diversity of conditions within the scope of podiatric medicine.
