This didactic course will provide a comprehensive understanding of the anatomical, microbial, immunological, and pathological aspects of periodontal health and disease, preparing students to recognize, prevent, and manage periodontal conditions effectively. It will introduce the macroscopic and microscopic structures of the healthy periodontium. It will cover the underlying causes and factors contributing to the development of periodontal diseases and conditions. Mechanisms involved in the formation of dental biofilm and calculus will be presented, highlighting their significance in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. The role of dysbiosis in the oral microbiome will be discussed concerning the pathophysiology of periodontal diseases and conditions. Understanding the body's defense mechanisms against oral pathogens and the immunopathological processes involved in periodontal diseases will be explored. The course will cover the clinical manifestations and histopathological features of gingivitis and periodontitis. Strategies for preventing periodontal disease onset and progression will likely be taught, including oral hygiene practices, professional cleanings, and lifestyle modifications.
