(Slashed with ARTH 52036 ) Emphasis on major periods of medieval art (Early Christian, Byzantine, Carolingian, Ottonian, Romanesque and Gothic), treating iconographic themes and styles in a variety of media. Works studied include architecture, manuscript painting, ivory carving and goldsmith work, most of which were produced by or for members of the clergy, royalty or lay aristocracy. The course, therefore, involves significant material relating to political, economic and religious issues. It investigates problems of patronage, function, reception and censorship. A strong emphasis is given to reading primary and secondary sources.
