THE FRANCOPHONE EXPERIENCE

This course offers an extensive introduction to various aspects of contemporary society and the culture of countries where French is spoken. In addition to providing a background for those interested in living, studying or working in a Francophone country, the course is designed to open fresh critical perspectives of American culture through comparative analysis with Francophone cultures. To this end, we focus both on how these cultures view themselves and each other. We read selections from both Anglophone and Francophone authors from a variety of disciplines, and also study representations of Francophone culture in film. The course is conducted in English, and knowledge of French is not necessary.
