This course covers the Ottoman Empire and its legacies; 19th century intrusion of the west; search for an Arab identity; emergence of Zionism; post-World War I mandate system; reconstruction of Turkey and Iran; struggle for Egyptian independence; post-World War II Arab-Israeli conflict; Arab socialism and the “Arab Cold War”; return of political Islam; emergence of the Gulf states; and demographic pressures.
