A HISTORY OF CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES

Catalog description

This course explores the history of "living outside the law" during the 19th and 20th centuries. Students read biographical and autobiographical treatments of and monographs about men and women who committed crimes during these centuries and use them as a lens through which to view the changing experiences, constraints and self-understandings of people who committed crimes throughout U.S. history. Some sections of this course may be offered as part of the Inside-Out program, during which the course takes place at a nearby prison or jail and includes students who are incarcerated.
