THE GLOBAL CRISIS OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

The seventeenth century was a period of crisis especially in Europe, but around the world due to climate change, encounters between peoples from different parts of the globe, the integration of economies, religious tensions and almost constant warfare. This course explores the roots of these crises as well as their consequences. It examines environmental changes; religious tensions; and some of the shifting social, political and economic structures of seventeenth-century Europe. It compares what happened during this period in Europe to other places around the globe, and investigates the interactions between peoples from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
