The development of the United States from its Native American roots and European immigration through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Course includes major political, social, cultural and economic developments; and incorporates key American civic literacy texts, specifically the Declaration of Independence, selected essays from the Federalist Papers, the U.S. Constitution, selections from Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address; and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from the Birmingham Jail.
