This course examines what constitutes a city, how it has evolved over time under changing economic conditions, and how globalization, technology and transportation have fundamentally changed its internal structure. Students analyze how race, class, gender and ethnicity have deeply influenced urban processes and produced complex patterns of spatial and social inequality, including racial segregation and concentrated poverty. Special attention is paid to the causes and consequences of social diversity within the city and analyzing both the challenges and opportunities that arise. The curriculum also considers principles of urban sustainability, addressing how cities can balance economic growth, social equity and environmental protection for future generations.
