AFRICAN FASHION ARTISANSHIP (ELR)

Catalog description

This course explores the rich landscape of African fashion artisanship, examining traditional and contemporary craft-based techniques used for garment construction and decoration. Students study methods such as beadwork, embroidery, leathercraft, appliqué, weaving, basketry, metalwork and the use of natural or upcycled materials in fashion. Through hands-on practice, case studies and ethical engagement frameworks, students learn how artisanship contributes to cultural preservation, product value and sustainable development, while gaining skills to collaborate appropriately with artisan communities. This course is offered in Kigali, Rwanda. Students must be enrolled at Kent State's Rwanda location to receive credit.
