CONTEMPORARY CRAFT: HISTORY AND THEORY

(Slashed with ARTH 42079 ) This course is designed to provide an overview of the history, theory and practice of modern and contemporary studio craft, with an emphasis on North America. Students develop an enhanced ability to identify and describe various media and styles of artistic production normally associated with “craft” genres: ceramics, textiles/fibers, jewelry/metals, glass and wood/furniture. Concurrently, an introduction to basic philosophies, pedagogical styles and controversial issues that have shaped this unique cultural, social and artistic history provide a framework for understanding the intersection of art, craft and design during the 21st century.
