AFRICAN CINEMA      3 Credit Hours

(Slashed with ARTH 52029 ) Through the art of cinema, students examine both films about Africa and films from Africa. After establishing a foundation for film analysis and critique as distinct from the plastic arts, the course covers a spectrum of films from Europe, America and Africa that center African protagonists, locales and stories to show how the camera has been used to embrace or reject stereotypes; imagine alternative futures for African peoples; and/or offer alternative methods of storytelling from mainstream Western films. After addressing films during colonialism and the post-colonial era, the final segment of this course focuses on contemporary film makers from Africa.
