Catalog description

This course focuses on the use of high throughput Omic technologies in biomarker discovery for medical diagnostics and basic research. We will discuss the pipeline from biomarker discovery to validation, and the pitfalls and challenges encountered at each stage. We will cover proteomics based on mass spectrometry and other methods. Relevant to nucleic acid biomarkers, we will discuss next generation sequencing and PCR based approaches for genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic analyses. In terms of metabolomics, we will cover NMR and GC-MS based methods. We will discuss multi-omic integration of data sets and the use of machine learning and AI in data analysis. The course consists of class discussions, assigned readings and computer exercises, in addition to a team project, report, and student presentations.
