Catalog description
This course is a hands-on translational laboratory course that builds on principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics introduced in Advanced Pharmaceutical Discovery and applies them to the evaluation of therapeutic candidates for human disease. Using a drug-repurposing framework, students analyze laboratory screening data from FDA-approved drugs tested against pathogens of clinical significance and integrate pharmacologic, mechanistic, and safety information to assess therapeutic potential. Through team-based analysis and individual reporting, students develop skills in interpreting experimental data, evaluating drug action and exposure, and making evidence-based recommendations relevant to patient care, translational research, and pharmaceutical development. The course emphasizes technical data analysis, scientific reasoning, and professional communication, while also introducing regulatory and translational considerations that influence therapeutic advancement. This course is designed to support pre-health students seeking clinically relevant pharmacology experience, research-focused students interested in translational analysis, and industry-oriented students developing decision-making skills for therapeutic development.
