Catalog description
The purpose of the course is for students to gain practical knowledge about common manufacturing processes and how they are used to produce medical devices. Topics span five primary course learning objectives: i. Specific manufacturing methods relevant to medical devices, including: machining processes, injection molding, metal forming, laser micromachining and microscale applications. ii. Lean engineering and efficient work cell designs. iii. Part specifications, allowances and tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), measurement systems analysis. iv. Applying various manufacturing methods and lean layout principles to medical devices through the use of industry examples including spinal spacer cages, stents, microfluidic devices, and plastic connectors, dispensers, fittings, etc. v. Statistical quality control principles and applications in medical device industry, including control charting and acceptance sampling.
