INTERNATIONAL ISSUES IN SOCIAL WORK

Catalog description

This course applies eclectic perspectives and social thinking to explore country-specific social, political, cultural, religious and environmental aspects that present risks to vulnerable groups leading to marginalization and exploitation. A special focus is on an examination of the context of social work practice abroad to facilitate cross-cultural comparisons and to identify areas of commonalities and differences to social work practice in the United States. Lastly, challenges and efforts employed to sustain the well-being of population groups through the United Nation's international instruments on Social, Economic, Cultural, Civil and Political Rights and more importantly to accomplishments of the UN's Millennium Goals for 2015 will shape students thinking about social work's role in promoting social and economic justice.
