Catalog description

This specialization clinical course builds on competencies from the first-year practice courses. The course will provide an understanding the role of clinician and focus on the therapeutic relationships as the framework for helping and developing interviewing and assessment skills appropriate with challenging clients and supported by empirical research. The course will help to develop competencies in assessment and treatment principles from the interpersonal, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral approaches including motivational interviewing skills to engage involuntary and hard-to-reach clients. Staying cognizant of complex ethical and value issues, impact of diversity, different system sizes, settings and populations is relevant to advanced clinical practice, and complements the mission, goals, and objectives of the MSW program.
