Catalog description

During this first course in a three clinical seminar series, assessment of student knowledge, skills and behavior will take place to provide a summative didactic measurement to determine readiness for promotion to the clinical year, a baseline for current status and formative feedback to inform plans for improvement. The evaluation methods include written (PACKRAT and program-developed) and practical (OSCE) examinations, simulated situations and interactions with standardized patients. Students will begin building a professional portfolio, which will be completed over the next two Clinical Seminar courses. Students also participate in activities to prepare for the transition to the full time supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPE) including rotation site specific requirements and completing an orientation to the clinical scheduling and patient-logging platform used by the program and clinical sites to document required student involvement practice responding in a professional manner to potential challenging situations with patients, colleagues and preceptors. Using seminars and practical small group activities, students learn the basics of coding, billing and the documentation necessary to meet the requirements for reimbursement of services rendered. Third party payers are compared and contrasted and the practice of cost-effective care is reviewed. Students explore malpractice coverage and review malpractice claims cases to consider how best to provide safe and effective patient care. During the later part of the course, small groups present and review actual patient cases with the faculty instructor to allow for examination of clinical decision making skills and continued development of clinical judgement. The acquisition and practice of critical thinking skills is reinforced to ensure students are able to integrate knowledge into the evaluation and care of patients across the lifespan in a safe and effective manner.
