Catalog description

Diagnostic Methods III builds upon advanced principles of diagnostic test selection, interpretation, and clinical reasoning developed in Diagnostic Methods I and II, with focused emphasis on endocrine, neurologic, musculoskeletal/rheumatologic, and hematologic presentations. This course advances students’ application of evidence-based testing algorithms, multimodal laboratory and imaging utilization, and longitudinal data interpretation while emphasizing recognition of system-specific limitations, evolving disease patterns, and sources of diagnostic uncertainty and error. Through case-based learning, simulation, structured data analysis, and guided literature appraisal, students refine skills in integrating diagnostic findings with patient history and physical examination data to optimize differential diagnoses, risk stratification, and longitudinal assessment strategies. The course further emphasizes diagnostic stewardship, cost-effectiveness, radiation and procedural safety, and risk–benefit analysis to promote high-value, patient-centered care and prepare students for increasing clinical responsibility and transition into supervised clinical practice.
