Catalog description

The course builds on the knowledge gained in PAS*5010 reviewing the basic physiologic and genetic regulatory mechanisms responsible for maintenance of homeostasis in the human body and introducing the pathophysiologic alterations, which when occurring in these mechanisms lead to specific disease processes. The focus of the pathophysiology unit is on organ systems including respiratory, circulatory, renal, gastrointestinal and endocrine, providing clinical correlations and an introduction to the diagnostic work up process, which support concurrent coursework in PAS*5410 Clinical Medicine One. Lecture material is augmented by case study review. The genetics unit provides the student with an overview of basic genetic principles in the context of their applications to clinical medicine. Pathogenesis of hereditary disease, genetic counseling and testing, prevention and treatment of genetic diseases including prenatal diagnosis and population screening will be presented and discussed.
