PERSPECTIVES ON GERONTOLOGY

Catalog description

This course addresses issues, services, demographics and interventions related to older adults including historical and contemporary perspectives on aging and the influence of social determinants of health on aging. Students learn about the biological aspects and physical process of aging, such as changes to the brain, dementia and theories of aging. Psychological aspects consisting of loss of control, dependency, loneliness and depression are addressed. Sociological issues involving family relationships, workforce and employment, age discrimination and elderly abuse are studied. Students learn about death and dying and the economic and political issues of aging.
