Catalog description

A cultural exploration of African-American music, art, and literature from their African roots to their diverse present expressions. This course encourages students to explore African American society within both a historical and social framework, highlighting the deep connections between West African cultures and African American identities. Students will develop an understanding of how historical experiences, such as slavery and the African diaspora, shaped African American communities. They will also gain insight into the rich cultural expressions of African Americans, focusing on key areas such as art, music, traditions, language, and literature. By examining these cultural elements, students will come to appreciate the resilience, creativity, and unique contributions of African Americans to American society, while recognizing the influence of African heritage in shaping these cultural forms.
