INTRODUCTION TO AFRICANA STUDIES

This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to Africana Studies, focusing on the experiences of people of African descent worldwide from a Black Studies perspective. It examines the African Diaspora, the historical and cultural shaping of Black identities, and the roles of agency and resistance in African-American history. Students will discuss and be introduced to critical issues, themes, perspectives, debates, and emerging trajectories within the discipline. The course will explore critical themes such as intersectionality, Black feminist thought, Pan-Africanism, the African Diaspora, the historical and cultural shaping of Black identities, the roles of agency and resistance in African-American history, and the impact of systemic racism, engaging with key social, political, and economic issues facing Black communities globally.
