BIOLOGY OF CANCER

Catalog description

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the cellular and molecular biology of cancer and to familiarize them with the pathogenesis of pre-neoplastic lesions and neoplastic diseases. Specifically, topics on carcinogens, hallmarks of cancer, cell cycle checkpoints, signaling pathways, cancer immunology, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, pan-cancer genomics, tumor progression, invasion, metastasis, tumor microenvironment, cancer stem cells, tumor classification, grading, staging, and tumor resistance are discussed. Applications in the fields of oncology and public health, including cancer prevention, biomarkers, pathway-directed anti-cancer therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy are highlighted. 3 hour lecture.
