This course provides a foundation in the anatomy and physiology of the human nervous system needed to understand the signs and symptoms of neurological injury and disease and to localize injuries within the nervous system. Students will study the human spinal cord, brain stem, cranial nerves, and cerebrum in the laboratory with an emphasis on clinical concepts. They will study sensory and motor systems, as well as cerebral fiber systems, blood supply and the ventricular system. Other important topics will include the anatomy and function of the thalamus, hypothalamus, and limbic system, with particular attention devoted to higher cortical functions. Students will engage in clinical reasoning for resulting conditions, such as spinal cord syndromes and neurological diseases. In sum, the course covers the structural and functional features of the nervous system essential for understanding neurological conditions and their pharmacological management.
