Clinical Dentistry V is the final course in the Clinical Dentistry series. Students are treating their family of patients under faculty supervision using the patient-centered comprehensive care model. They will devote this term to completion of their patient’s finalization of care and/or transfer to other students. Clinical Dentistry V is an advanced, hands-on course designed to refine students’ skills in both operative dentistry and orthodontics, preparing them for comprehensive patient care in a clinical setting. This course integrates cutting-edge techniques and evidence-based practices, emphasizing the diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of complex dental conditions. Advanced Operative Dentistry: Students will deepen their understanding and proficiency in restorative procedures, including preparing and restoring typodont teeth with simulated caries, core build up and post placement procedures and direct esthetic restorations. Focus will be on the use of modern materials to achieve functional and esthetic outcomes in restorative cases, with an emphasis on long-term success and patient satisfaction. Orthodontics: In the orthodontic component of the course, students will gain basic knowledge in the recognition, diagnosis and management of malocclusions, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary care. Students will explore the principles of orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, and an introduction to the mechanics involved in both types of treatment options, including traditional orthodontics and clear aligner therapy. Students will also be introduced to the principles of space management, growth modification, and alignment techniques that are essential for creating optimal occlusion and function. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Clinical Dentistry IV and foundational knowledge in operative dentistry and orthodontics.
