The Clinical Dentistry IV course is the fourth in the Clinical Dentistry series designed to prepare the student for the clinical skills needed in patient care. Taught primarily in the dental simulation clinic, yet with an emphasis on mirroring a true clinic setting, this course will focus on current clinical practices and emphasize the advancements of endodontic principles and procedures. This course will also integrate, whenever possible, the information concurrent in the Biomedical/Clinical sciences, Foundations of Patient Care and Dental Sciences course material to support the relevance of this information in providing optimal patient care. Along with the specific clinical skills training and practice, treatment planning, diagnostic techniques, preventive procedures and dental materials will be fundamental throughout all Clinical Dentistry courses. This course is the study of the principles of endodontics and is designed to prepare the student to recognize, assess, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues within the scope of the general practice of dental medicine. It will also introduce the student to the concept of dental emergency treatment from an endodontic perspective. The course includes, but is not limited to, the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and treatment of the dental complex and periradicular tissues. The course aims to introduce the dental student to the biological and clinical sciences related to the normal and diseased dental pulp and associated periradicular tissues. The course will also introduce endodontic case selection criteria relative to case difficulty and practice limitations, informed consent, and patient management. Simulation - The patient simulation exercises are designed to prepare the dental student to apply learned principles associated with patient assessment, radiographic assessment, diagnosis of pulpal and periradicular diseases, case difficulty assessment, treatment planning, management of pulpal and periodontal emergencies, and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues.
