Catalog description

The Foundations of Patient Care IV course presents a variety of learning experiences to help prepare student doctors to provide oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures in a general dental practice. Topics will include: principles of surgery and exodontia, pre-prosthetics, implant surgery, prevention and treatment of oral infections, management of oral pathologic lesions, treatment of oral and maxillofacial trauma, and dentofacial deformities. Student doctors will acquire knowledge and practice through lectures, case discussions, and hands-on sim lab exercises with experienced dentists and oral & maxillofacial surgeons. The course will integrate with Clinical Dentistry IV and Biomedical and Clinical Systems IV, using surgical videos and case discussions to illustrate the application of surgical principles when caring for patients. Student doctors will get hands on experience using oral surgery instruments, learning suturing techniques, and exodontia practice sectioning teeth in the Simulation laboratory.
