Clinical Dentistry I

The Clinical Dentistry I course is the first in a continuum of Clinical Dentistry courses designed to prepare the student for the clinical skills needed in patient care. It includes dental anatomy, introduction to biomaterials, occlusion, ergonomics, instrumentation, armamentarium, and operative dentistry. Taught primarily in the dental simulation clinic, students will be introduced to the core concepts of clinical dentistry in a simulated clinical environment. This course will introduce preventive procedures, dental materials, and hand skill development. Topics included in Clinical Dentistry 1 will be: • Instrument identification, nomenclature, usage and maintenance • Equipment operation and ergonomic positioning and practices • Principles of biomaterials and choosing the appropriate restorative material • Hand skill development through waxing and sketching • Dental morphology and nomenclature • Principles of operative and restorative dentistry • The continued influence of digital dentistry in advanced restorative care
