Catalog description

The course will be taught during the spring semester as a required introductory level course for first year veterinary students. The primary objective of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to learn normal animal behavior for the most commonly evaluated large animal species in clinical practice (the horse and the cow); to safely handle and restrain them; and to practice basic physical examination skills. A secondary objective of the course is to introduce students to the basic principles of biosecurity, sterile technique, venipuncture, and intravenous catheterization. In addition, students will build onto first-semester instruction in clinical communication, written documentation within the medical record, and introductory surgical skills. The course will include introductory lectures as well as structured and self-directed laboratory sessions that will involve both live animals and non-animal teaching models.
